Cell Division
I. What is the Cell Cycle? The Cell Cycle is a process that the cell grows and divides to make a copy of its self
|
II. What is mitosis? The purpose of mitosis is to repair or replace damaged cells.
Interphase- the cell is engaged in metabolic activity and is getting ready for mitosis. Prophase- Chromatin in the nucleus begins to become visible as chromosomes in the light microscope. Prometaphase- The nuclear membrane dissolves Proteins attach to centrosmeres making the kinetorchres. Metaphase- Fibers align the chromosomes along the middle of the cell nucleus. When chromosomes are separated the new nucleus will get a copy of each chromosomes. Anaphase- The paired chromosomes help separates the kinetorchres and goes to the opposite side of the cell. Telophase- New membranes form around the daughter nuclei and no longer visible by light microscope Cytokinesis - A fiber ring made up of protein, in plant cells rigid wall requires that a cell plate between the two daughter cells. In the first stage of Mitosis is interphase when the cell is involved in metabolic activity. then Prophase the nucleus is visible to a light microscope as chromosomes. Next is Prometaphase which the nuclear membrane dissolves proteins. After that is the metaphase when chromosomes are separated the new nucleus will get a copy of each chromosomes. Then Anaphase which the chromosomes help separate the kinetorchres and helps them go to the opposite side of the cell. Next is the Telophase when new membranes form around the daughter nuclei and no longer visible by light microscope. Last is the Cytokinesis when the rigid walls needs a cell plate between the daughter cells. |
III. What is meiosis? The cell division that ends up with 4 daughter cells and they each have half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell. it produces gametes (ova and sperm) .There are two stages of meiosis: meiosis I and meiosis II.
|
IV. Mitosis v. MeiosisMitosis and Meiosis both have chromosome replication before the processes begins. Both have the same stages (prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase) but some events in the stages meiosis are different from mitosis. Both have cytokinesis that occurs during telophase .Meiosis occurs in sex cells and mitosis occurs in body cells . Meiosis produces four offspring cells with half of the original cells’ chromosomes. Mitosis produced two offspring cells with identical chromosomes as the original cell.
